The book is a unit of instruction for expository and literary analysis writing, but clearly demonstrates Weaver's philosophy in a way that teachers can recreate or revise it for their needs. This is an outstanding resource for any high school instructor teaching non-fiction writing. Be aware the book is not designed to be read from beginning to end, but instead presents the lesson plan at the beginning of the book with each lesson, resources, and handouts included farther into the book.
However, once you Banish Boring Words! Great idea. They have these words separated into categories: verbs, adverbs, adjectives There is also a section on transition phrases to use. Some of the words are challenging, but my 6th grade student that I tutor wants to use this book every time she writes.

I purchased this book after having borrowed another teacher's copy. It is an excellent, step-by-step method of teaching expository writing, with teacher instruction pages and student practice activities. It is aimed at grades , and I particularly like that the student practice activities are clearly marked as to level of difficulty. These are not fill-in-the-blank activities; they are thought provoking and encourage creativity in students as well as emphasizing the necessary structure of an expository essay.
One of my young pupils who has struggled academically told me that his classroom teacher praised his writing and had him read his essay to the class.

More than any other type of writing, expository writing is a daily requirement of most careers. Understanding and following the proven steps of the writing process helps all writers, including students, master this type of essay writing. Expository Essay Structure Usually, your essay is composed of five paragraphs.
The introductory paragraph contains the thesis or main idea. The next three paragraphs, or body of the essay, provide details in support of the thesis. The concluding paragraph restates the main idea and ties together the major points of essay. Next, do research and take notes.
Create an outline showing the information to be presented in each paragraph, organized in a logical sequence. Keep these considerations in mind:. If the essay is still missing the mark, take another look at the topic sentence. A solid thesis statement leads to a solid essay. Once the thesis works, the rest of the essay falls into place more easily. While your essay should be clear and concise, it can also be lively and engaging.
Having a friend read the essay helps writers edit with a fresh perspective.
